Fly Futures Origin Story
A Phoenix-rising Journey
Fly Futures™ was not built from a business plan. It was built from the inside of disruption.
Between 2020 and 2023, Dr. Knatokie Ford navigated a season of profound personal upheaval — the loss of her father, a breast cancer diagnosis, and a serious car accident that left her with a severe jaw fracture. Living through compounding disruption, Dr. Ford noticed something profound happening inside herself: her relationship with the future was changing. In the depths of loss and recovery, her capacity to imagine forward all but disappeared — the future collapsed altogether or narrowed into a near-term, urgent only present. Then, after the car accident, counterintuitively, something shifted. The future didn't just return. It burst open. What could have felt like an ending began generating possibility she couldn't have conceived.

Futures ALCHEMY
That lived experience — from collapse to combustion — became the laboratory for everything that followed. Dr. Ford turned to cognitive science to understand what had actually happened: why disruption so reliably diminishes our imaginative capacity, and what specific conditions allow it to be restored and even expanded. What emerged from that inquiry was not just personal insight. It was a methodology — a structured, science-backed process for helping others make the same breakthrough.
Integrating cognitive science, strategic foresight, and storytelling with hard-fought lived wisdom, Dr. Ford developed the Futures ALCHEMY™ methodology — a seven-step practice for transforming uncertainty into imagination, agency, and forward momentum. Fly Futures™ emerged as the vehicle for bringing that methodology to leaders, organizations, and institutions navigating their own moments of profound change.

Why Fly Futures?
The name carries its own history. Fly began as the spirit behind Fly Sci® Enterprise — Dr. Ford's original education and media consulting firm — where "fly" meant exactly what it sounds like: exceptional, distinctive, operating in a league of its own. That spirit didn't change when Fly Futures emerged. It expanded. To fly is to move beyond what gravity insists is possible. And futures — deliberately plural — is a rejection of the idea that what comes next is fixed or inevitable. Fly Futures exists at the intersection of those two convictions: that extraordinary things are possible, and that the futures we get to inhabit are a reflection of how audaciously we imagine and the intentionality of our actions.

About the Founder
Knatokie Ford, PhD

A Futures Alchemist
Dr. Knatokie Ford is the Founder & Chief Visionary Officer of Fly Futures™. She has not only thought outside the box — she has lived there. A Harvard-trained biomedical scientist, Obama White House science policy advisor, science consultant on the Netflix Emmy-winning animated series Ada Twist, Scientist, TEDx speaker, and U.S. State Department International Speakers Program alumna — her career has redefined what it means to be a scientist.
Earlier in her career, after completing a postdoctoral fellowship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Dr. Ford's commitment to expanding who gets to shape the future took her to the Obama White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). She first served as a AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow with the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST), managing concurrent projects focused on education technology and workforce development. Following her fellowship, she was appointed as a Senior Policy Advisor at OSTP, where she developed and led the national Image of STEM initiative — listed among the top 100 science and technology accomplishments of the Obama Administration.
The seeds of Dr. Ford's interdisciplinary path were planted when she took a leave from her doctoral studies at Harvard to teach middle school science in an underserved community in Los Angeles — an experience that revealed how imagination, representation, and belonging shape what futures feel attainable to young people. That animating question led her to the intersection of science, storytelling, and culture, where she has worked with some of the most influential organizations in the world: serving as science consultant on Netflix's Emmy-winning Ada Twist, Scientist and Disney Junior's Eureka!, overseeing the development of YouTube's first-ever Creating Inclusive Content course, serving as an executive advisor for the Association of National Advertisers' global SeeHer movement, and traveling to Namibia and eSwatini as a U.S. State Department International Speakers Program speaker.
Dr. Ford holds a PhD in Experimental Pathology from Harvard University and a BS/MS in Chemistry and Biological Chemistry from Clark Atlanta University. She is also a recipient of an honorary doctorate of science from Regis College.
"The futures we inhabit are a function of the audacity of our imagination and the intentionality of our actions."

About Fly Futures

The Lab
Fly Futures™ is a strategic imagination lab founded on a simple but urgent premise: the capacity to imagine a radically different future is itself a strategic asset — and one that most organizations are inadvertently under-developing.
At the heart of Fly Futures' work is the Futures ALCHEMY™ methodology — a proprietary seven-step framework for navigating disruption at every level.
Anticipate · Listen · Curate · Hone · Envision · Manifest · Yield
The methodology gives individuals, teams, and organizations a shared language and structured process for moving from fear-based reactivity to imaginative agency — the capacity to see, design, and build what comes next.
Fly Futures works with organizations across corporate, higher education, nonprofit, and public sector contexts through keynotes, workshops, executive retreats, and strategic advisory engagements. Every engagement begins the same way: with deep curiosity about your organization's specific moment — and what becoming future-ready actually means for your context.
Fly Futures™ is a venture of Fly Sci® Enterprise, Dr. Ford's long-standing education and media consulting firm.
